The empowerment of engineering

We owe so much to our forefathers for they were our pathfinders for the future. This is especially true with GEISS and Modern Plastics Equipment. Both founders of businesses in new technologies established after 1945. We know very well the Georg Geiss story. However Robert Langley also had a remarkable career. Many people are unaware he was involved in the Canadian C-105 Avro Arrow Long-range Fighter Interceptor Project in 1952. Bob"s Company Standard-Modern was contracted for the tool design for the nose section, air intakes and canopy components.

The Arrow was considered by many to be twenty years ahead of its time with a maximum speed of 1,325 mph (Mach 2). Many of the personnel involved in this project later joined NASA, Boeing and The Concorde project.

Bob Langley & Manfred Geiß

As this project concluded in the political arena, Bob returned to Australia and re-entered the Rubber Industry with Dunlop Rubber in 1961, then in 1965 moved into Plastic Processing with one of the countries pioneer Glass and Plastic Processors A.C.I  (Australian Consolidated Industries).  In 1975 Bob moved back into the field he loved, that of mainstream engineering with the James N Kirby organisation. There he promoted the use of a relatively new technology called robotic automation. In addition to robotics, Bob managed the design and construction of Special Purpose Machinery and Precision Transfer Lines technology. These were successfully sold as component production cells to the likes of Toyota, General Motors Holden, Mitsubishi and Ford automotive plants in Australia.

In 1976 both Bob"s sons Damian and Chris enrolled into cadetships in Mechanical Engineering and joined the company James N Kirby. During this time they both gained experience in all facets of engineering with notable highlights being the involvement with Hawker De Havilland, McDonnell Douglas F18 and Harpoon Missile component manufacture contracts.

In 1978 Bob was appointed Managing Director of company MPI Australia, a leading supplier to the plastics and packaging industries in Australia and New Zealand. It was during this time that Bob developed our longstanding relationship with George & Manfred Geiss representing their company in our region.  In 1984 Bob acquired control of the MPI Plastics Division and was joined by his son Chris.   At this time Damian was engaged by a US based manufacturer of Laminar Work stations and Clean Rooms and is an accredited " NATA signatory " for the certification of Clean Rooms and workstations in both Medical & Avionics.  In 1993 Damian joined the management team at Modern Plastics Equipment P/L.

In our past 20 years of close association with GEISS, MPE has introduced state of the art Vacuum Forming and Trimming equipment into many of the leading Whitegoods, Sanitary Ware & Automotive parts manufacturers in this region. Modern Plastics Equipment provides in addition to sales support, complete installation and commissioning services as well as comprehensive training on all aspects of operation and maintenance of the GEISS equipment.  MPE looks forward to continued strong co-operation with the GEISS organisation where we can offer the most technically advanced equipment for the Vacuum Forming and related industries.
