16. Laser cutting unit
Fabrics of interior parts can often be cut by laser only, since the fabric will fray during milling or ultrasonic cutting. For example, the edges of acrylic parts for displays must also be absolutely smooth and glass-clear.
For such jobs we offer for use in our machines an extremely maintenance-free sealed CO2 Slab-Laser. This laser can be used for 3-axes as well as 5-axes milling. If suitably equipped the machine can performed combined milling and laser cutting jobs. When a laser is used the machines must be completely encased and provided with an extraction. A centre screen cannot be used on these machines.
The advantages at a glance
When cutting acrylic material, glass-clear edges can be achieved,
many fabrics and fleeces can be cut with excellent results and without fluff,
the fabric will not fray and can be processed fast and efficiently,
no swarf is produced and no noise,
only simple supporting shapes are necessary for the materials,
the workpieces are not subjected to forces, the process is thus especially suitable for thin components with little rigidity,
a laser can cut sharp-edged recesses and smallest radii.
Yet we do not want to withhold from you the drawbacks of this process
The edges thus produced, in particular of thick materials, are not absolutely straight,
not all materials can be cut; PVC for example is highly critical because of the hydrochloric acid generated, other materials like PET or PC are easily scorched at the cut edges,
the feed rates are much slower than in milling, in particular for thick materials,
the fumes generated will stain the lens relatively quickly, it needs frequent cleaning,
the exhaust air of the extraction must be evacuated outdoors; heat recovery systems are not economical for single machines.
