3. Swarf extraction systems

Milling produces mostly a large amount of swarf that has to be evacuated. The best way to do this is to extract it directly from where it is produced, during milling. In the case of 5-axes processing and complex components however it is seldom possible to extract the swarf directly from the milling spindle due to the tubing and accessibility.

The founder of our company Georg GEISS has found the solution to this problem already many years ago when milling deep drawn components:

If the components are milled with a left-hand twisted but right-hand cutting cutter, the swarf is flung towards the cutter tip and can be extracted through grooves in the cutter arbor.

The system consists of a fan with a filter and a plastic bag suspended beneath it into which the swarf falls by gravity. The machine is also equipped with pneumatic slide gates to shut off the extraction tubing. The slide gates can be actuated via the NC program. On machines equipped with a swarf hopper behind the machine table, the hopper is also connected to the swarf extraction system via a manual slide gate. The small swarf extraction system according to this Option has a power of 1.5 kW and an extraction volume of 2,300 m³/h.

The large extraction system according to Option 4. has a power of 5.5 kW and an extraction volume of  5,000 m³/h. The diameter of the extraction tubing is 120 mm.

In some applications it is also possible to extract directly from the milling spindle. In these cases an exhaust connection exactly adapted to the application and the component is fixed to the milling spindle by means of a quick-action clamp. The swarf extraction system is selected to provide optimum vacuum and extraction volume for the individual application.

The swarf extraction system is also used for clamping or sucking of air-permeable components that cannot be held by vacuum, and also for very thin-walled components, e.g. refrigerator boxes where suction by a vacuum pump fails because it is not possible to insert gaskets into the jig.

Both swarf extraction systems are completely linked by tubes and suction funnels with the machine and their function is integrated in the control.
