GEISS Glossary

Roll feed

A roll feed is an automated device that unwinds rolled material (plastic films) in a controlled manner and feeds it evenly into a thermoforming machine. It ensures a continuous material flow and prevents tension fluctuations or disruptions in the process sequence.

Applications and benefits of a roll feed

Roll feeds are mainly used in film processing and thermoforming technology. They monitor the material level of the roll, regulate the unwinding process and often allow parallel operation with two rolls. This is particularly advantageous in twin-sheet production or in highly automated manufacturing processes, as roll changes can be carried out without interruption.
In automated systems, roll feeds are also frequently combined with a cross cutter to cut the unwound material directly to exact lengths.
