Weakening (airbag)

The weakening of materials describes a machining process in which a workpiece is not completely cut through but deliberately weakened at defined points. This creates predetermined breaking points that can be opened in a targeted and controlled manner during later use. A classic example is the airbag in a vehicle: the interior trim is processed in such a way that it tears in an emergency, but only where intended.

Methods and applications of weakening

Weakening can be carried out using different methods, such as laser processing or ultrasonic cutting – depending on the material and application. High precision is particularly important to ensure that the predetermined breaking point functions reliably and safely. In addition to airbag production, the process is also used in the manufacture of technical covers or housing parts with opening functions.
