GEISS Glossary
Honeycomb
Honeycomb is a specialised structural material with a honeycomb-shaped design, inspired by the natural form of a beehive cell. This geometry gives the material high stability while keeping the weight low. Honeycomb is typically made from paper, aluminium, thermoplastic plastics or fibre-reinforced composites.
Applications of honeycomb material
Honeycomb is often used as a core material in sandwich components where an optimal weight-to-strength ratio is required. Typical applications include vehicle and aircraft construction, lightweight industrial design, as well as packaging solutions and carrier materials in the thermoforming process.
Thanks to its structural advantages, honeycomb material enables high stiffness with minimal material usage – ideal for applications with demanding requirements for mechanical strength and weight reduction.
