GEISS Glossary
Thermoforming
Thermoforming is a thermal forming process used for processing thermoplastic materials. The thermoplastic semi-finished product is heated to forming temperature until it becomes soft and malleable. It is then drawn or pressed into a mould using vacuum, compressed air or mechanical assistance. After cooling, the plastic solidifies into the desired shape.
Applications and benefits of thermoforming
Thermoforming is particularly suitable for producing lightweight, large-area and geometrically complex components with high surface quality – for example, for the automotive industry, medical technology or the packaging sector. Compared with injection moulding or other processes, thermoforming is often more economical for medium to large component sizes and lower production volumes.
GEISS is a leading supplier of thermoforming machines and offers customised solutions for demanding applications – from stand-alone units to fully automated production lines.
