Ultrasonic cutting

Ultrasonic cutting is a cutting process in which a blade is set into high frequency vibrations by means of ultrasound and used as the cutting tool. This allows materials such as plastics, textiles, honeycomb structures and composite materials to be cut precisely and cleanly with minimal force, often without fraying or thermal deformation.

Ultrasonic cutting is particularly suitable when conventional machining processes reach their limits, for example when working with materials that are difficult or impossible to mill. The process enables chip free, clean cuts with high dimensional accuracy and minimal force, making it particularly suitable for sensitive or fibre reinforced materials.

Typical applications of ultrasonic cutting can be found in the automotive industry, where tear lines, also known as airbag weak points , are created in vehicle interior panels. The process is also ideal for precisely cutting roll or sheet materials used for flooring or skis.
